A practical, conversation‑led leadership experience

Facilitated by Tim Ferguson, Director of Leading Teams, the intensive was intentionally designed as a closed and confidential space. Business NSW Northern Rivers did not attend the sessions, allowing participants to engage openly and honestly with one another.

There were no slide decks or prescribed models to memorise. Instead, the program was built around shared experiences, facilitated discussion and self‑reflection, creating the conditions for senior leaders to step back from operations and examine what is really happening inside their teams and organisations.

Over two days, participants were invited to:

• Reflect on their own leadership style and its impact
• Review the current health of their team and business environment
• Explore what high performance looks like in practice, not theory
• Learn from peers navigating similar leadership responsibilities and pressures

This approach enabled a depth of conversation that is rarely possible in day‑to‑day leadership settings.

Exploring the foundations of high‑performing teams

Using the Leading Teams model, discussions centred on the core elements that underpin strong teams and cultures:

• Clarity of purpose - a shared understanding of why the team exists and what success looks like
• Agreed behaviours - how people show up, challenge, support and hold each other to account
• Strong professional relationships built on trust and respect
• Ongoing review conversations that enable continuous improvement

Participants explored how these fundamentals play out in their own organisations and where gaps, tensions or opportunities for improvement exist.

Leadership that adapts to context

A key theme across the intensive was the role of the leader in shaping team dynamics.

Leaders examined:

• What it means to be a high‑performing leader in different contexts
• How and when to adapt leadership style
• The importance of genuine, regular conversations about performance
• The link between strong relationships and business outcomes

Rather than offering one-size-fits-all answers, the intensive encouraged participants to reflect on what their teams need from them right now, and how they can lead more deliberately.

A setting designed for connection

The experience was intentionally residential, with participants staying overnight at Ramada Ballina and sharing meals together, including a group dinner at Saltbush.

Removing the usual distractions created the space for deeper connection and trust to form, strengthening peer relationships that will continue beyond the event itself.
