FAST TRAINS, BIG GAINS: HIGH SPEED RAIL TO SUPERCHARGE JOBS AND BUSINESS

24 Feb 2026

The state’s peak business body says the Newcastle-Sydney High-Speed Rail will be a game-changer for Sydney, the Hunter and Central Coast – slashing travel times, driving investment, and creating thousands of jobs across NSW.

The $90 billion project, Australia’s largest single infrastructure investment, would cut travel times between Newcastle and Sydney from two‑and‑a‑half hours to just one hour, linking communities, workers, and businesses like never before.

Business NSW Chief Executive Officer, Dan Hunter, said the project would redefine the Hunter’s economic future.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform connectivity between Sydney and Newcastle and supercharge economic growth in the regions,” he said.

“Faster travel will effectively unite the two labour and business markets, unlock housing opportunities, drive population growth, and make the region more competitive for national and international investment.”

Mr Hunter said high-speed rail would arrive at a crucial time for the Hunter, as the region adapts to the energy transition and seeks to attract new industries and investment.

“This project will generate immediate economic stimulus, create jobs and new skills, and reshape the region’s economic profile for the long term.”

Mr Hunter said Infrastructure Australia’s endorsement for the Development Phase was a major milestone.

“It’s a positive sign that the hard work and advocacy of many stakeholders is being recognised. Now is the time to keep the vision alive and ensure the Hunter is front and centre in Australia’s transport future.”

The Newcastle-Sydney HSR link is the first stage of a proposed Brisbane-Melbourne high-speed rail corridor with six stops.
